Falling on Southport by M. J. Slater follows Abigail, who, from a politically connected family, helps Jim Hardy wade through social expectations, law school ambitions, and family introductions, including holiday visits. Their relationship grows, intertwining with Jim’s cousin Lee, who becomes pregnant and relies on Jim for support, prompting Abigail to assist with childcare while planning her wedding. Abigail maintains friendships and neighborhood connections, especially with her neighbor Jake, while mitigating issues between Jim, her brother Devin, and Lee. Over time, Abigail and Jim’s intimacy and communication decline. Just after the holidays, Jim abruptly asks for a divorce, citing an affair, then leaves. Days later, Abigail learns from the police that Jim has died in a train accident, placing her under immediate suspicion and setting the stage for the circus her life is about to become.

Slater is an intense and emotionally charged story that places readers directly in Abigail’s life as she deals with the aftermath of her husband’s sudden death and her unexpected arrest. The story stands out in its portrayal of family interactions, showing the support, humor, and occasional friction that arise as Abigail manages bail hearings, media scrutiny, and the practical logistics of proving her innocence. Slater’s writing conveys the urgency of the investigation, the subtle details about Jim’s actions, and the moments of connection that keep Abigail grounded, from her brothers’ playful yet caring interventions to her parents’ strategic guidance. Overall, Falling on Southport is a fantastically original and wholly entertaining mystery. Very highly recommended.
